Across seven locations, 21 premiers were crowned across Perth Football League B-E Grades and Colts competitions. It was a huge day for the PFL with congratulations going to the winning teams, but also commiserations to those who didn’t quite get the result they were looking for. There were upsets aplenty, with previously undefeated sides getting a taste of defeat at the worst possible time. Plus, A Grade Grand Finals are now set with the preliminary finals decided on Saturday.
In one of the boilovers of the year, Whitford lost their first match of the year in the Toyota B Grade at the last hurdle, falling to a determined North Fremantle outfit by four points. These two teams had met a couple weeks earlier in the semi final, with Whitford running out easy winners in a wet and windy day, so for North Fremantle to turn the result around was an incredible effort.
North Fremantle struck first, however Whitford settled into the match and kicked the next three goals of the term to reach the quarter time break ahead by two straight kicks. The second quarter was a tale of straight kicking compared to wayward. Whitford took their chances with three straight goals which bookended two behinds to North Fremantle. With the scoreline Whitford’s way at 37 to 9, the Magpies needed something heading into the major break. Up stepped Lachlan McManus with a major after the half time siren that kept North Fremantle in it.
The second half couldn’t have started better for North Fremantle, with Brandon Sheperd kicking truly from the boundary to bring the score within three goals and hand all the momentum to his team. After trading behinds for the next ten minutes, Blake Monaghan for Whitford extended the lead back out to 22 points. It was then all North Fremantle, who finished the third quarter full of run and added three goals to none and trimmed the margin to just three points at the last break.
Whitford’s Fraser Foley slotted home the first goal of the final quarter to calm some nerves. The Magpies were having none of that and continued their hot run of form with three goals in three minutes, finding themselves 10 points ahead of the undefeated Whitford with 13 minutes to play. Tensions rose, with both sides willing themselves into the contest trying to get their side home. Whitford were unable to break through with the final siren sounding and North Fremantle celebrating as Toyota B Grade Men’s Premiers. A final goal to Whitford brought the margin to three points, but was all too late. Congratulations to Hamish Rodgers from North Fremantle who was judged best on ground.
Swan Athletic took home the Toyota C1 Premiership in a convincing win over Cockburn Lakes. It took until halfway through the second quarter for Cockburn Lakes to register their first major and by then they had found themselves five goals behind. With work to do in the second half, the Warriors fought hard but just couldn’t find a way through a steady Swan Athletic defence. With five minutes to go in the third term, Swan Athletic’s Gavin Munt kicked his third and extended the lead to 25 points. Two goals to none in the last quarter only extended Swan Athletic’s lead. Congratulations to Ben Weymouth from Swan Athletic who was awarded Best on Ground.
At Claremont Oval, Gosnells started the Toyota C2 Grand Final stronger than their opponents Kwinana. Finding themselves ahead at quarter time (28-9), the Hawks held on to the lead and ran out winners 11.8 (74) to 7.9 (51). Whilst never comfortable, strong contributions from Tyson Headland and Robbie Woods across the match would have made the coach proud. Congratulations to Robbie Woods from Gosnells who was judges Best on Ground.
One of the closest matches across the day, saw Forrestdale just get over the line against North Beach in the Toyota C3 Grand Final. The Falcons found themselves on the right side of the scoreline when the final siren sounded, winning 5.6 (36) to North Beach 5.5 (35). Lochlan Bloomer from Forrestdale took home the Best on Ground honours. Over at Wyong Reserve, the C4 Premiership was won by University, who defeated Maddington 8.7 (55) to 4.5 (29). University forged ahead, leading by 26 points at half time, and managed to hold Maddington there with the score never getting closer than 14 points. Congratulations University’s Matthew Moroney who won Best on Ground.
In the Toyota C5, Kenwick proved why the third quarter is considered the “premiership quarter.” Three goals to one saw the Royals turn a five-point deficit at half time to Kelmscott into an eight-point lead at three quarter time. Kelmscott managed to add two more goals to their score in the last, but just wasn’t quite enough as Kenwick ran out winners 7.8 (50) to 7.5 (47). Steele Milne capped off a great day for Kenwick when he was awarded Best on Ground for his stellar display.
Other results from a huge Saturday saw Trinity Aquinas win the E1 premiership, E2 went to Wembley, E3 North was a convincing win to Kingsway and Forrestdale added another flag on the day taking out E3 South.
Reserves winners were Collegians in the B Grade Reserves, Jandakot in C1 Reserves, Willetton in C2 Reserves, North Beach in C3 Reserves, Fremantle CBC in C4 Reserves and Bayswater in C5 Reserves.
Electrical Group Training Colts grades saw some fantastic football played in incredible spirits. EGT Brett Jones Colts saw Trinity Aquinas defeat Curtin Uni Wesley by just 11 points at Wyong Reserve. All eyes now turn to Pentanet Stadium with the final three matches to be played in the 2024 Perth Football League season on Saturday 14th September.
