What was the best day all week weather wise made out for a cracking contest between two very tough opponents in Willetton and High Wycombe and if history is anything to go by between these two sides, the fans were in for a tight one.
The early stages of the game saw Willetton dominate from the get-go and found themselves on the scoreboard early thanks to 2 quick goals by Jack Zonca. High Wycombe started to find some movement and ball carry and was rewarded with a quick goal themselves to find some momentum before Willetton put a complete stop to that and managed to sneak another 2 goals on the board just before quarter time to see the Blues lead 25-12 at quarter time.
Willetton would again start the 2nd quarter the same way they started the game with some early pressure which resulted in a goal from Daniel Donegan and push the lead to 19 points and High Wycombe found themselves on the back foot early. Cliff Nita standing strong in the back line for High Wycombe would get his team fired up and rolling with some brilliant defensive work which would result in 2 quick goals and High Wycombe would find themselves inching closer as half time approached. A 1.3 to 3.1 quarter to High Wycombe saw the bulldogs eat into the lead and only trail by 3 points at the main break.
A back and forth start to the third quarter saw both teams locked in a stale mate for much of the early stages, but Willetton would score the breakthrough goal, However High Wycombe would then reply with a goal of their own to stay within touching distance of the Blues. Both teams kicking 2.1 in the third quarter would see Willetton taking a 3-point lead going into the last quarter and a nail biting final 15 minutes coming up.
A quick goal from High Wycombe to open the last quarter would see the bulldogs edge in front for the first time in the game, but it was short lived as Tyson Worthington would kick his 4th goal of the day, it would put the Blues back in front where they would remain for the rest of the game. Again, it would be Cliff Nita would would be the backbone of the High Wycombe defence and would try everything he could to bring his side back into the game. Anytime High Wycombe would move forward the Willetton defence would stand strong and repel any chance of a bulldogs score thanks to Zac Aquino.
As the final siren drew near the Willetton forwards were able to lock the ball down for the rest of the game as the Blues would go on to record a thrilling 9-point win over the Bulldogs at home.
