Friday the 20^th saw a big double header go down at the Gosnells oval, first the inaugural Electrical Group Training North vs South Colts Clash followed by a tight face off between the Perth Football League and the New Holland WA Women’s teams.

The EGT Colts clash kicked off at 5:30pm marking the beginning of the very first ‘battle of the river’ between the North in red coached by Tom Medhat and the South in blue coached by Fabian D’Agnone. With the wet weather creating quite the challenge for the boys, the South team was strong right from the beginning kicking the first goal of the game and leading going into half time at 19-2.

The North didn’t give it to them easy though as they came back out strong in the second half kicking two goals and closing the gap a little, this wasn’t enough to defeat the South though who took home the win with the final scoreboard showing 28-18 to the South. Breen Doyle from Lynwood Ferndale Football club took the MVP award.

As the rain continued to pour the PFL and New Holland Country Women took to the field at 7:15 to settle the score after last year’s draw. The New Holland country team played an excellent first half leading 15-8 going into half time, before holding off a late charge from the PFL winning the game by just one point 28-27.

Steph Walding the head coach of the Perth Football league was proud of the girls’ performance especially the way they played in the last quarter though when we spoke to her after the game she did say:

“everyone is feeling a little disappointed, we could have won”.

There were many strong performances on the field Friday night including Sabreena McKinnon from Baldivis putting on a show with a number of tackles as well as Natasha Spurr from Scarborough playing an excellent game in the wing and being named the PFL best on ground.

Ella Smith on the New Holland Country team was named best on ground overall for playing an amazing game and standing up when the team needed it.

Both games proved to be a spectacle to watch for the crowd who stayed despite the wet weather including a certain eagle named Rick who made a star appearance and gave out many fist bumps.
