The Perth Football League is gearing up for the 2024 season with a strong emphasis on supporting positive game day behaviour. Under the overarching theme of "Respect the Call," the league aims to curb umpire abuse and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for players, officials and spectators alike.
Acknowledging the integral role umpires play in the game, the league is set to implement two key initiatives throughout the season. The first initiative, aptly named "Stop the Abuse," is not only exclusive to this league but extends its reach across all of WA football. This initiative underscores the importance of condemning any form of verbal or physical abuse directed towards umpires. It aims to instil a sense of accountability among all participants and emphasises the need to treat umpires with dignity and respect.
Additionally, the league is embracing the SportWest initiative True Sport. Part of this initiative champions the idea that there is no place for poor game day behaviour and emphasises the importance of creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for everyone involved. By promoting positive interactions and mutual respect, the league hopes to create an environment where players can focus on enjoying the game without fear of judgment or hostility from the sidelines.
"Respect the Call" serves as a poignant reminder that umpires are not just officials but integral members of the community. They could be our family members, friends, or colleagues volunteering their time to ensure fair play and uphold the integrity of the game. By fostering a culture of respect towards umpires, the league aims to strengthen the sense of camaraderie within the community and reinforce its position as the premier community league.
PFL CEO Andrew Dawe remarked, "As we embark on the 2024 season, we are committed to promoting positive game day behaviour and upholding the values of respect and sportsmanship. Our umpires play a crucial role in the game, and it's imperative that we show them the appreciation and respect they deserve.”
As the PFL gears up for an exciting season ahead, it calls upon all participants, supporters, and stakeholders to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and uphold the values of respect, fairness, and inclusivity both on and off the field. Together, let us champion positive sideline behaviour and ensure that every call is met with understanding and appreciation.
